Freedom is one of the most cherished ideals in this nation.
Yet one may be led to wonder, “What does it mean to be truly free?”
Some herald our constitution as the source of this nation’s freedom. They say as long as this document is honored we will remain free. But are we truly free even now?
To be sure, nations that have undertaken a system of democracy have known only a period of freedom.
Historically, each of these nations have fallen to tyranny and dictatorship. What separates the United States of America from these fallen democracies?
What standard makes us better?
Are we following a different pattern or is history simply repeating itself?
No, we have not learned from the annals of history.
We have not taken to heart the patterns that have preceded the fall of every once great democracy and therefore we have not shored up the walls of national freedom.
So then, what freedom is assured?
What freedom is lasting?
What freedom can never be taken?
It is not the temporal freedom of democracy but the eternal freedom extended by grace through faith in Christ Jesus. So then it stands to reason that there are freed men in enslaved nations and enslaved men in free nations.
Yes, all temporal freedom can be taken but our eternal freedom in Christ cannot be stolen.
Are you free?
