  1. This is such an important word, Chris. We have to learn from the Teacher Himself; not from what the “wise and learned” think that He is saying. The only way to do this is to sit in His presence and listen. “Take my yoke upon you and learn from ME…” We have to be like children, holding the hand of a parent in a crowded place. There are many voices in these times, many distractions, many dangers – and only one person in whose presence we have safety and direction. We let go of His hand at our peril.

  2. There is a distinction to be made between “theology” and “doctrine”.  While theology is a systematic study of doctrine – which may sometimes become an intellectual end in itself and thus unhelpful to our Christian walk, sound doctrine – which is to be found in Scripture – is important for salvation.  The Apostle Paul emphasised this with the warning,
“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers;..” [2 Timothy 4:3]

The distinction is important, because of the danger of dismissing Biblical doctrine as something intellectual. This other side of the coin is to elevate the emotion side of our nature by attributing all subjective feelings as the promptings of the Holy Spirit.  Because, inevitably, we also operate at the level of mind, there is no getting away from doctrine: if we dismiss sound doctrine to be found in Scripture as “theology”, the mental vacuum created may then be filled by believing the “doctrines of demons”, something which Paul also warned about.

  3. Rightly said, Brother.  The Holy Spirit is teaching us theology, if we just sit at his feet and listen.  We need one gospel in this world, not many gospels.
