Obedience Is Better Than a Sacrifice! — 3 Comments

  1. What did the prophet mean by this verse?

But Samuel replied, “What is more pleasing to the LORD: your burnt offerings and sacrifices or your obedience to his voice? Listen! Obedience is better than sacrifice, and submission is better than offering the fat of rams. (‭1 Samuel‬ ‭15‬:‭22‬ NLT)

Take special note to this verse. Look closely at the words in caps. The first part of the verse says: But Samuel replied, “What is more pleasing to the LORD: YOUR BURNT OFFERINGS AND SACRIFICES OR YOUR OBEDIENCE to HIS VOICE? Listen! Obedience is better than sacrifice, and submission is better than offering the fat of rams. (‭1 Samuel‬ ‭15‬:‭22.
During this time the children of Israel under the law. They were to be obedient to the law.Paul writes:For the message God delivered through angels has always stood firm, and every violation of the law and every act of disobedience was punished. (‭Hebrews‬ ‭2‬:‭2‬ NLT)

Also stated by the Apostle Paul this the old system:the law which required burnt sacrifices of bulls and goats. Those sacrifices were not acceptable to God. The bible says:
“The old system under the law of Moses was only a shadow, a dim preview of the good things to come, not the good things themselves. The sacrifices under that system were repeated again and again, year after year, but they were never able to provide perfect cleansing for those who came to worship. If they could have provided perfect cleansing, the sacrifices would have stopped, for the worshipers would have been purified once for all time, and their feelings of guilt would have disappeared. But instead, those sacrifices actually reminded them of their sins year after year. For it is not possible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. That is why, when Christ came into the world, he said to God, “You did not want animal sacrifices or sin offerings. But you have given me a body to offer. You were not pleased with burnt offerings or other offerings for sin. (‭Hebrews‬ ‭10‬:‭1-6‬ NLT)

The new covenant calls us to obey God’s only son. He is the acceptable sacrifice that God finds pleasure in…not your sacrifices or obedience to the law.

First, Christ said, “You did not want animal sacrifices or sin offerings or burnt offerings or other offerings for sin, nor were you pleased with them” (though they are required by the law of Moses). Then he said, “Look, I have come to do your will.” He cancels the first covenant in order to put the second into effect. For God’s will was for us to be made holy by the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ, once for all time. Under the old covenant, the priest stands and ministers before the altar day after day, offering the same sacrifices again and again, which can never take away sins. But our High Priest offered himself to God as a single sacrifice for sins, good for all time. Then he sat down in the place of honor at God’s right hand. There he waits until his enemies are humbled and made a footstool under his feet. For by that one offering he forever made perfect those who are being made holy. (‭Hebrews‬ ‭10‬:‭1-6, 8-14‬ NLT)

See the old covenant was canceled by God. The new covenant isn’t about our obedience but Christ’s obedience. According to Paul, before Christ we were slaves. “And that’s the way it was with us before Christ came. We were like children; we were slaves to the basic spiritual principles of this world. But when the right time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman, subject to the law. God sent him to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law, so that he could adopt us as his very own children. And because we are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, prompting us to call out, “Abba, Father.” Now you are no longer a slave but God’s own child. And since you are his child, God has made you his heir. (‭Galatians‬ ‭4‬:‭3-7‬ NLT)

Now we are free to fellowship and worship our King! He calls us now to love for which there is no law and to “share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ. (‭Galatians‬ ‭6‬:‭2‬ NLT) It’s about His obedience and us believing in his work on the cross to recieve our forgiveness and righteousness. The word tells us our part:
Anyone who believes and is baptized will be saved. But anyone who refuses to believe will be condemned. (‭Mark‬ ‭16‬:‭16‬ NLT)
