“Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock.  And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock.  Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.  The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell — and great was its fall,”   Matthew 7:24-27.

There is always a new teaching, or a new word from God that we can read and hear about these days.  There is an abundance of these things, and most of them can be easily forgotten.  Of course we need to sift through the many things we read to find out what is true and what is not.  But as we read and as we allow these true words to soak into our spirits, what good would it be if we just think of them as true and meaningful, without acting upon them?

It would be just like reading a good book or viewing a beautiful painting, and then walking away with the fleeting memory of these things.  The words of God are not meant to be just a memory, but they are meant to produce good fruit and a solid foundation in us.  They aren’t just words, but in them is life.

We may hear and believe a true word from God that speaks of how He will protect His own through the dark and devastating days that are ahead.  We may rejoice and believe in these things momentarily, and then during the next few days and weeks ahead, they drift away like dust in the wind.  The truth in them didn’t sink in, and life went on as usual with its many problems and snares.

We may be captivated by the illuminating words that come from a true prophet.  We may revel in and say our “Amens” and “Hallelujahs” to God as our spirits are lifted and encouragement and perhaps even correction is given.  And then as the days pass, some may sit and wait for the next tasty morsels to come.  Surely, others will come, and as they do, we are captivated by them once again.  But again, these words are easily forgotten, just like the previous chapters of an old book.

Our world of Christendom has become so used to all the influx of prophecies and teachings in this hour.  It’s almost like we’re in a candy shop ever searching for and tasting the newest pieces we can find.

And then perhaps we remember the simple truth of Jesus’s words about the house that was built upon the sand, and how it sank because its foundation was not solid. If we would but build our house upon the rock of putting into practice those things that we have heard and learned.  Then we wouldn’t be tossed to and fro with the winds of various doctrines of men and this world.
