What is “Revival”?

What is “Revival”?
How does it come?
Where does it come from?
One of the greatest misconceptions about Revival is that it comes from Heaven — as if God reaches through the skies and piercing the natural dimension with a supernatural visitation that runs for a season and then ends.
The second great misconception is that Revival is an “outpouring of the Spirit,” experienced in manifestations of supernatural phenomena that feel powerful, exciting, and even pleasurable.
Now, before you decide that I don’t know what I’m talking about, let me assure you: I have facilitated some of the wildest Revivals — with all the phenomena you can name, and probably a few you’ve never even heard of.
Yet, it wasn’t until The Holy Spirit led me away from the wonders — the healings, deliverances, joy, salvations, the crowds, and everything else typically associated with Revival — into the stillness, that I began to see why these kinds of Revival never bring lasting change.
And why they always leave people wanting more!
These Revivals are like water cupped in your hands — eventually it will run out, no matter how hard you try to contain it.
People are left crying for another “outpouring,” and another, coming thirsty again and again.
But Jesus spoke of a different kind of Water — that would satisfy the soul forever.
He never pointed us to outpourings; He promised an in-pouring. Something deeper. Something sustaining.
Yes, these Revival encounters can be impactful and helpful, but they are never sustainable.
They don’t leave people fulfilled. There must always be a return trip to these “wells.”
But Jesus told the woman at the well that she would never have to come back again — for the Living Water He would give, would become a sustainable Fountain of Life within her, bubbling up into eternity.
Many today drink from streams and brooks of temporary encounters, but Jesus invites us to a deeper experience:
To drink from the true Well of Life, that, once received, becomes a sustaining Fountain within us.
So, what is true Revival?
I suggest to you that true Revival is not a heavenly encounter on earth — it is a transformation of our being as we step into God’s dimension.
It is transfiguration into the realm of the Spirit where we meet Him face to face — and remain in Him, as He remains in us. It is continual, unbroken union with His Spirit.
True Revival is an Awakening. An inner Awakening where we enter a realm of Life we never before realised was available to us.
How does it come?
Not from above, but from within.
It is not God reaching down from Heaven, but God awakening the soul.
True Revival comes when someone drinks deeply from the Well of Christ — and in turn, becomes a Well for others to drink from.
It is not a visitation; it is an invasion. God unveils Himself in us so deeply that we are forever changed — not just in our outer life, but awakened to our eternal Being in Him.
It turns our gaze inward, where we find Him dwelling within us — and ourselves dwelling in Him.
We discover union. We discover oneness. We experience His life as our very habitation, in unbroken harmony.
Revival, then, is the overflow of those who have truly drunk from the Well — who themselves become fountains from which others may drink.
Are you thirsty? Then come and drink, freely!

~ Johann van der Hoven
Johann van der Hoven has followed The Holy Spirit on a transformative journey since 1990. From 1991 onward, he has experienced and walked in the profound reality of God’s Presence, a journey that has shaped his life and message.

The church in America is like a man clothed in a snow mobile outfit. Clothed from head to toe. Standing next to the ocean and only one bare toe in the water. When the God of all creation says remove every stitch of clothing and do some deep sea diving with nothing hindering you. Most will remain on the shore with all the kooky clothing of religion and not get rid of the grave clothes because of the opinions of others. My thought ditch the old and voyage to the bottom of the sea. The church in America dosent need a revival it need a transformation why revive what should have never been born in the first place. Most all we see is getting ready to be spewed out of the mouth of Jesus.
Yes people who walk away from cups of water return for more but the water that the hosts of revival distribute never remains pure in the long run. As they begin to promote themselves as carriers of revival their water becomes muddy but they are often deluded into believing that it is getting better and grander. I commend you for leaving the limelight while the water was still living
