A Word for the Season ~ March 2017 — 1 Comment

  1. When I read the word SOD, I was reminded of the 4 levels of reading/understanding Scripture. SOD is the deepest and most hidden of the 4.

    Simple, Hint, Search, Hidden.

Each layer is deeper and more intense than the last.

Peshat (פְּשָׁט) — “plain” (simple) or the direct meaning. The literal principal. Grammatical historical sense.
Remez (רֶמֶז) — “hints” or the deep (allegoric: hidden or symbolic) meaning beyond just the literal sense.
Derash (דְּרַשׁ) — from Hebrew darash: “inquire” (seek) — the comparative (midrashic) meaning, as given through similar occurrences.
Sod (סוֹד) (pronounced with a long o as in ‘bone’) — “secret” (mystery) or the mystical meaning, as given through inspiration or revelation
