Obedience Over Understanding
There are some stories and verses in the Bible that seem very unusual to us.
Lets look at two:
1) Paul blinds a man!
Acts 13:6-12, describes Paul removing a man’s eyesight temporarily since he was seeking to turn people away from the faith.
“Now when they had gone through the island to Paphos, they found a certain sorcerer, a false prophet, a Jew whose name was Bar-Jesus, who was with the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, an intelligent man. This man called for Barnabas and Saul and sought to hear the word of God. But Elymas the sorcerer (for so his name is translated) withstood them, seeking to turn the proconsul away from the faith. Then Saul, who also is called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked intently at him and said, “O full of all deceit and all fraud, you son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, will you not cease perverting the straight ways of the Lord? And now, indeed, the hand of the Lord is upon you, and you shall be blind, not seeing the sun for a time.”
And immediately a dark mist fell on him, and he went around seeking someone to lead him by the hand. Then the proconsul believed, when he saw what had been done, being astonished at the teaching of the Lord.” Acts 13:6-12.
2) The Holy Spirit told some apostles not to preach The Gospel!
“Now when they had gone through Phrygia and the region of Galatia, they were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to preach the word in Asia. After they had come to Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia, but The Spirit did not permit them. “ Acts 16:6-7.
Paul, Silas, and Timothy were giants in the faith. Incredibly strong men who have done mighty miracles by the power of The Holy Spirit.
However, The Holy Spirit did not permit them to go into certain cities (Acts 16:7). Furthermore, Acts 16:6 says, “They were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to preach the word in Asia.”
These two stories seem to go against the grain of Christian’s thinking, as we want to spread The Gospel to everyone and we want to heal eyesight, not make people blind.
So I took these two stories to The LORD and asked Him His thoughts about how we are to interpret these stories that may seem strange to us.
He said: “My People are to depend on Me for everything.
I AM their LORD and their God. You are to follow Me and My Instructions and not do things because they seem to be good for you.
I will lead you and instruct you just as I did with Paul and My apostles.
They did what was expected of them.
I want you to do the same — just because it seems unorthodox, does not mean it is bad!
Listen to Me and develop a keen sense of what I AM wanting you to do. This will lead you into greater works for Me, for many are uncertain about the uncertainty of some passages.
These passages are not meant to hinder anyone, but to strengthen them!
Yes, I do “unusual” things, but that is because I know best.
Seek Me and I too, will have you do “unusual” things. Trust Me!”
