Praying in Tongues — 1 Comment

  1. Every time in the Bible when they speaks in tounges every one understands what they say because they speak FROM God not ‘to’ God! This is the spirit of Jesus, the spirit of prophecy which Paul says is for the beleivers while speaking in an UNKNOWN tounge are for the unbelievers (who speaks FROM there own spirit.
“My” Spirit is not the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit who is the Spirit of God speaks FROM God, not ‘to’ God. Does God need to speak to himself through us???
No where does Paul says that the speaking in ‘unknown’ tounge is the Holy Spirit who speaks nor does He say they are baptized in the Holy Spirit. He says clearly what every one can read that it is a spiritual ‘gift’ not a baptize in the Holy Spirit. Some churches has twisted Pauls teaching into doctrines and this is one of the reason the churches are powerless which all false teaching automatically leads to.

“For if I pray in a tongue, my (NOT the Holy Spirit!)spirit prays, but my mind is unproductive,” 1 Corinthians 14:13-14.

Paul says that without understandable words one speak into the air. The greek word for air is psyche which means one speak with the own psyche, NOT the Holy Spirit!

“except ye utter by the tongue words EASY TO BE UNDERSTOOD how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air,” 1 Corinthians 14:9

The reason Paul says that one shall speak understandable(from what one hear God says TO you) is that one shall edify others. The gifts of the Spirit is always for edifying others therefore can a speaking in an unknown tounge never be from God.

“He that speaketh in an unknown tongue (from his own spirit) edifieth himself, but he that prophesieth (speak what he hears God say) edifieth the church,” 1 Corinthians 14:4

“be not children in understanding howbeit in malice (wickedness) be ye children, but in understanding be men,” 1 Corinthians 14:20

Next verse is exactly what it says NO words because it is more of a deep feeling, a heavy burden on the heart, to pray for things one does not know why one do it. Many times I’ve been praying for things because of this heavy burden and first a long time afterwards I have been aware of that such a problem (that I was praying for) existed. I have always prayed in my own understandable language and the heavy burden on the heart is the groaning which is NO words and no speaking in tongues!

“the spirit himself intercedes on our behalf with sighs and groanings too deep for words,” Romans 8:26-27

Paul says clearly that the “unknown tounge”, the laungage which no can understand is unfruitful which means that it will not give the ‘fruit of the spirit’. Therefore he also says that one must pray with understanding because all our speech MUST give divine understanding.

“if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also, I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also,” 1 Corinthians 14:14-15

Many say that this verse means that Paul himself spoke ‘in unknown tounges’ but actually what he says is that he because of that He speaks directly from revelation from God he speaks in an understandable spiritual fruitful tounge which is edifying to the church more than every one else. Sad to say is that everyone does not interpret what he says with the spirit but with the flesh. And the flesh is unfruitful.

“I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all,” 1 Corinthians 14:18

Therefore is the only Holy Spirit the tounge that is understandable and the only sign of that God is in you!

“But if all prophesied (NOT spoke in an unknown tongue), and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all and so falling down on his face he will worship God, AND REPORT THAT GOD IS IN YOU is in you of a truth,” 1 Corinthians 14:24-25

The Lord does not say that He will speak in an unknown tongue as the tongue which Paul speaks of in 1 Corinthians 14:2 but in ‘other’ tongues which is something else.  Men of other tongues are those who God uses to speak prophecy FROM Him and still they will not listen.

“In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people, and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord,” 1 Corinthians 14:21

Hope this will edify those who does not speak in some ‘unknown’ tongue and give them comfort in that honestly praying from the own heart with fully understandable words is enough.  The devil will not flee from us because of incomprehensible words from our own spirit, but because of our perfect obedience to the commandments from the voice of the Lord.
