It might surprise you to know that Derek Prince paid significant attention to physical fitness.  That’s a good point to keep in mind as you read his encouragement in Part 5 of this Teaching Legacy of Derek Prince, “Twelve Steps to a Good Year.”  The first section focuses on our need to run the race set before us. Derek was comfortable with that teaching, clearly connected to his desire to run his own race — both physically and spiritually — and to finish well.

I remember an early meeting with Derek where I was surprised to see him with his arm in a cast.  I asked, “What happened, Derek?”  He explained that he had been doing the Parcourse Fitness Trail close to his home in Ft. Lauderdale, and had slipped at one of the stations.  As he put his hand down to stop his fall, he broke his wrist.  Derek was concerned about staying fit.  Who knew?  I’m not sure he jogged daily, but he certainly saw the importance of it.

In Derek’s presentation of the next step in this series, Step 9: Let Us Run with Endurance the Race, he offers some of his own “spiritual” coaching:  “Confronted with this race that is set before us, I want to point out four requirements for success in the race.”  You’ll definitely want to absorb these points.

Derek then adds Step 10: Let Us Show Gratitude, sharing two benefits for those who are grateful.  First, “A thankful person will always experience the grace of God.”  Second, “Thank­fulness does something in our spirits that nothing else can do.”  These two points — joined with what we have already covered and the ones to come — will encourage you as you keep moving forward.

Whether you’re just getting started in your race or nearing the finish line, these truths from Derek Prince will help you to run and finish well.  Let’s get started!
