What Is Wrong With Peace and Safety?
“For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape,” 1 Thessalonians 5:3.
Why would sudden destruction come when people are looking for peace and safety? Certainly, this doesn’t at first glance appear to something that one would be wrong in wanting.
We all want to live in a world that is filled full of peace and brotherhood towards all. Most of us don’t relish the idea of war and destruction.
But perhaps the real issue isn’t the wanting or the desire for peace that is a problem. Even Jesus was proclaimed as the Prince of Peace.
He came in the form of a humble servant who was the Great Shepherd. And yet of course, many did not receive him, because His Kingdom was not of this earth.
But you see, when people think that all is well, and that they can rest knowing that they are good, then they are relying upon their own strength, and their own abilities. Most of those who lived at the time of Noah were eating and drinking, and thought that life would always go on as usual.
They partied and danced taking part in all kinds of evil, thinking that nothing would ever keep them from living the life style that they had been accustomed to. And as we know, all were wiped out except for the family of Noah and his kin.
Many think that they will always be safe and will find peace and plenty, especially when a new form of government promises many things.
Treaties are signed and billions of dollars are granted in exchange, for programs that some think will provide a type of peace and assurance for many.
But at some point in time, travail will come just like a woman who is ready to give birth. The pain and the anguish are like sharp knives that only a woman giving birth would understand.
And yet as always, God in His infinite wisdom gives us a word picture that illustrates the suffering and the pain that would come to all who would trust in their man-made peace and luxury.
All must experience pain and a type of suffering in this life; it is a result of the fall of man, and the sin that came in the beginning.
We have however, a new seed of life given to us from the Father above, and while that won’t ease the suffering and pain that comes to all in this life, we are assured that He will go through those times with us.
An ultimate time of peace and safety will come after the Rider on the White Horse comes to set up His new Kingdom.
Until that time though, there will never be ultimate peace and safety upon this earth.
