When You Falter — Quickly Turn Your Gaze Back to Him!
Peter: Faith to Get Out of the Boat!
I was rereading the story of Peter in Matthew 14.
Many over the years have consistently highlighted the lack of Faith that led Peter to fall into the water, rather than to have Faith to get out of the boat, and then begin to walk on the water toward Jesus!
The contrary winds and the threatening waves diverted his gaze from the only One he was supposed to contemplate, regardless of the circumstances surrounding him.
It’s clear that when one obeys Jesus’ command, the attacks persist.
What stands out in this passage is that he “began” to sink, not that he sank, and I emphasize that “he began….”
Often, when there is adversity and setbacks in our lives, we immediately give up and cry out to Jesus, forgetting that we can turn everything around if only we turn our gaze back to Him, because He is there standing before us, with us and for us.
We are quick to throw everything the LORD has given us into the sea because we feel incapable of focusing our gaze on Him again — but don’t let doubt, fear or stubbornness override your faith- turn again to Him quickly!
Brothers and sisters, every biblical passage has been placed there for our teaching
We have already written the answers; all we need to do is open the Word of God and let Him teach us.
Prayer
LORD, whenever our gaze wanders away from you, help us to remember, and bring it back to you.
We have so many things yet to accomplish and understand.
But if You promised that you would never leave us or abandon us, we must take this into account.
May our lives be so intensely intertwined with Yours that we are no longer able to understand where you or we begin.
Father, only to you do we give the key to our hearts because they must belong only to you.
A place where you come to rest and to speak to us as friends.
Father, may the storms of life never shake us to the point of losing sight of the face of Christ.
It is He, that we desire to imitate, follow, and love.
Thank you because through Him we have seen firsthand your true nature, that of the purest and most sublime love that can exist.
Thank you, Our Father
Through Jesus our LORD,
Amen.
