Discernment in Relationships
The Holy Spirit can give you Discernment about a person’s approachability.
There are times when He leads you to be open, friendly, and build a relationship with someone. At other times, He may prompt you to keep your distance.
Consider this example.
Imagine you see a large snake lying on the ground in front of you.
You have two choices:
- Move toward the snake.
- Move away from the snake.
If you choose to approach the snake, one of two things may happen: it may slither away, or it may bite you. There is uncertainty in approaching it, and there is risk.
In the same way, not every person is someone you are meant to pursue a close relationship with.
The LORD never instructs us to become close friends with everyone we meet.
Just as you would not approach every snake, there are people from whom wisdom calls you to keep a healthy distance.
Some relationships bring encouragement and life, while others bring unnecessary pain.
Sometimes the most loving thing you can do is love someone from afar.
One way many believers believe The Holy Spirit provides discernment is through an inner sense that a relationship should not be pursued.
You may notice experiences such as:
- You have little desire to start or continue conversations with the person.
- When you’re with them, conversation feels unusually difficult, and you struggle to think of things to say.
- You find yourself working hard to gain their attention or keep them engaged.
- Conversations remain shallow despite sincere efforts to build a deeper connection.
- Your mind tells you that you should connect with the person, but your heart has no genuine peace or desire to do so.
Not every awkward interaction is a sign from God!
Personalities differ, and many factors can make a conversation difficult.
For that reason, discernment should always be accompanied by prayer, wisdom, humility, and measured judgment.
As you walk with The LORD, ask Him for wisdom in every relationship.
He is able to give you peace when you should move closer and caution when you should step back.
Learning to recognize His guidance can help you build healthy relationships while avoiding unnecessary heartache, stress, and problems that sometimes come from connecting too closely with the wrong people.
The Holy Spirit says: “Listen to instruction My People.
Be alert, for not everyone is going to like Me.
Not everyone is My Friend.
Some hate Me and want nothing to do with Me.
I will guide you into what you are to do.
You are to be alert to what I AM speaking to you in the moment.
Do not get caught up in the things of this world.
Be committed to Me and allow Me to engage you with the right people that I have put in your way.
