LORD, Let Your Love Break Through!
I am hearing a 1970s song, “Your Love Broke Through” by Phil Keaggy.
I am seeing a skater again. They are in an ordinary local rink. It’s a Saturday morning and they’ve just been doing their grocery shopping.
They’re skating carrying bags of groceries. That’s not easy! Eventually they leave their bags at the side.
Then they are moving elegantly and boldly across the ice, doing a spiral with one foot very high in the air, a jump sequence and an extraordinary jump combination*. It requires absolute confidence.
The LORD says, “You are meant to be flying free but there is a stone holding back your heart from Me.
I AM well able to roll away the stone that has kept you from Me. Give Me permission to do this for you.
Let go of the trauma you suffered.
Let go of your fears.
Let go of your disappointment.
Let go of your resentment.
Let go of your bitterness.
Let go of your despair.
Let go of your anger.
Let go of your doubt and cynicism.
Let go of your worries.
Let go of your longing.
Come alive in Me! You can trust Me.
You are safe with Me.
I AM more than enough for you.
I AM big enough to guard it all.
I AM gentle.
I AM loving in all My ways.
Receive My unconditional Love.
Receive My Seal of Approval.”
Prayer:
LORD, nothing on earth is as worth desiring as You are.
Whom have we in heaven but You?
You are our refuge and it is wonderful to be near You.
Please roll away the stone from my heart.
I haven’t meant to, but I have been holding onto things that come between us.
I have been grieving, embittered, ignorant, thoughtless, fearful and full of doubt.
I am sorry. I repent of holding back from You. Please forgive Me.
Help me let go of everything I have been clinging onto that has been hampering me. Heal and transform me.
Let Your loving light and life flood in.
Fill me with Your glory so I can show you to the world! In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
“When my heart was grieved and my spirit embittered, I was senseless and ignorant; I was a brute beast before you. Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand. You guide me with your counsel, and afterwards you will take me into glory. Whom have I in heaven but you?
And earth has nothing I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion for ever.”
Psalm 73:21-26.
Behind the Song:
The LORD asked me to be technical and explain this, because it will have specific meaning for some of you.
In 1976 singer and songwriter Phil Keaggy recorded an album including this song.
He is an outstanding musician, arguably one of the greatest guitarists of all time (I’ll leave you to debate that amongst yourselves).
“Your Love Broke Through” was written by Keith Green, Todd Fishkind and Randy Stonehill but Keith insisted that Phil must be the first to release a recording.
Part of the lyrics are:
“With one touch You just rolled away
The stone that held my heart
Now I see that the answer was as simple
As my need to let love in
And I am so sure I could never doubt
Your gentle touch again
It’s like the power of the wind
Like waking up from the longest dream
How real it seemed
Until Your love broke through
And I was lost in a fantasy
That blinded me
Until your love broke through”
The song is fifty years old. The style may not be to your taste but there is a something extra in this recording.
People combined in fellowship
- combined with musicianship
- combined with consistent persevering practice
- combined with hearts that are set free in Christ Jesus
- combined with humility before The LORD
- together make anointed worship.
What makes this recording special is not the skill of the writers, musicians and producers but their heart towards The LORD.
If you made it this far and you are able to:
1 Meditate on the whole of Psalm 73.
2 Play the song and sing along with it. God loves hearing you sing even if you or your dog do not! Where the lyrics are “Until Your love broke through” instead, sing “LORD, let Your love break through!”
