Restitution in the Bible is the act of making amends for a wrong by returning property or compensating for loss, serving as a tangible evidence of genuine repentance.
Rooted in Old Testament Mosaic Law, it required offenders to pay back more than the value of what was stolen or damaged, such as five oxen for one stolen ox or four sheep for one sheep (Exodus 22:1-4), and adding an extra fifth to the value for sins involving fraud (Leviticus 6:1-7).
In the New Testament, restitution is highlighted through Zacchaeus, who pledged to repay those he cheated fourfold (Luke 19:8), demonstrating that true transformation involves righting past wrongs.
Jesus also taught that reconciliation with those one has wronged is a prerequisite for worship (Matthew 5:23-24), emphasizing that spiritual restoration is inseparable from relational and material accountability.
Key principles include:
Restoration over Punishment: The goal is to restore the victim to their prior state plus compensation, reflecting God’s justice and mercy.
Confession and Compensation: Restitution must be paired with confessing the sin and offering a guilt offering to God (Numbers 5:6-7).
Voluntary Generosity: Believers are encouraged to go beyond legal minimums, as seen in Zacchaeus’s voluntary fourfold repayment.
Relational Healing: Making restitution is essential for restoring community harmony and personal peace with God and others.
“Come Back! Return to Your God! O Israel, come back! Return to your God! You’re down but you’re not out. Prepare your confession and come back to God. Pray to him, “Take away our sin, accept our confession. Receive as restitution our repentant prayers. Assyria won’t save us; horses won’t get us where we want to go. We’ll never again say ‘our god’ to something we’ve made or made up. You’re our last hope. Is it not true that in you the orphan finds mercy?”” Hosea 4:1-3.
Bible Scripture:
*The biblical account of 185,000 Assyrian soldiers being killed by a single angel in one night is recorded in 2 Kings 19:35 and Isaiah 37:36. This event occurred during the reign of King Hezekiah of Judah, when the Assyrian king Sennacherib besieged Jerusalem.
“Speak to the sons of Israel, ‘When a man or woman commits any of the sins of mankind, acting unfaithfully against The LORD, and that person is guilty, then he shall confess his sins which he has committed, and he shall make restitution in full for his wrong and add to it one-fifth of it, and give it to him whom he has wronged.'” Numbers 5:6-7.
“But when I say to the wicked, ‘You will surely die,’ and he turns from his sin and practices justice and righteousness, if a wicked man restores a pledge, pays back what he has taken by robbery, walks by the statutes which ensure life without committing iniquity, he shall surely live; he shall not die.” Ezekiel 33:14-15.
“Then The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, “If a person acts unfaithfully and sins unintentionally against The LORD’s holy things, then he shall bring his guilt offering to The LORD: a ram without defect from the flock, according to your valuation in silver by shekels, in terms of the shekel of the sanctuary, for a guilt offering. He shall make restitution for that which he has sinned against the holy thing, and shall add to it a fifth part of it and give it to the priest. The priest shall then make atonement for him with the ram of the guilt offering, and it will be forgiven him.”” Leviticus 5:14-16.
“Then David’s anger burned greatly against the man, and he said to Nathan, “As The LORD lives, surely the man who has done this deserves to die. He must make restitution for the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing and had no compassion.”” 2 Samuel 12:5-6.
“But when he is found, he must repay sevenfold; He must give all the substance of his house.” Proverbs 6:31.
“David said to him, “Do not fear, for I will surely show kindness to you for the sake of your father Jonathan, and will restore to you all the land of your grandfather Saul; and you shall eat at my table regularly.”” 2 Samuel 9:7.
“Now Elisha spoke to the woman whose son he had restored to life, saying, “Arise and go with your household, and sojourn wherever you can sojourn; for The LORD has called for a famine, and it will even come on the land for seven years.” So the woman arose and did according to the word of the man of God, and she went with her household and sojourned in the land of the Philistines seven years. At the end of seven years, the woman returned from the land of the Philistines; and she went out to appeal to the king for her house and for her field.” 2 Kings 8:1-6.
“Now the king was talking with Gehazi, the servant of the man of God, saying, “Please relate to me all the great things that Elisha has done.” As he was relating to the king how he had restored to life the one who was dead, behold, the woman whose son he had restored to life appealed to the king for her house and for her field. And Gehazi said, “My lord, O king, this is the woman and this is her son, whom Elisha restored to life.” When the king asked the woman, she related it to him. So the king appointed for her a certain officer, saying, “Restore all that was hers and all the produce of the field from the day that she left the land even until now.”” 2 Kings 8:1-6.
“But The LORD was pleased to crush Him, putting Him to grief; If He would render Himself as a guilt offering, He will see His offspring, He will prolong His days, and the good pleasure of The LORD will prosper in His hand. As a result of the anguish of His soul, He will see it and be satisfied; By His knowledge the Righteous One, My Servant, will justify the many, as He will bear their iniquities. Therefore, I will allot Him a portion with the great, and He will divide the booty with the strong; Because He poured out Himself to death, and was numbered with the transgressors; Yet He Himself bore the sin of many, and interceded for the transgressors.” Isaiah 53:10-12.
“Looking at him, Jesus felt a love for him and said to him, “One thing you lack: go and sell all you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”” Mark 10:21.
“Jesus said, “Truly I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or farms, for My sake and for the gospel’s sake, but that he will receive a hundred times as much now in the present age, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and farms, along with persecutions; and in the age to come, eternal life.”“ Mark 10:29-30.
“More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ, and may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith, that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death,” Philippians 3:8-10.
