Rivers in the Desert
“O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You; My soul thirsts for You; My flesh longs for You In a dry and thirsty land Where there is no water. … Behold, I am going to do something new, Now it will spring up; Will you not be aware of it? I will even make a roadway in the wilderness, Rivers in the desert.” Psalm 63:1 (NKJV); Isaiah 43:19 (NASB)
Dear Ones: Rivers in the Desert!
David’s petition for help is seemingly answered by God through Isaiah.
Although Isaiah lived many years after David was dead, his prayer for help was recorded in the Psalms.
Israel used the Psalms as their hymnal, so they were singing them in Isaiah’s day.
Therefore, it is appropriate to consider them together as a petition of the people and God’s answer.
By natural observation we know that rivers bring life to a region, especially to parched lands.
Even in recent times we have seen the deserts break out with plant life when unusual heavy rains have occurred. Similarly, our souls receive refreshments when the rain of the Spirit comes, bringing us peace and deliverance.
Our souls can become parched and dry while waiting for answers to our prayers.
Also, spiritual warfare can bring weariness to our inner man. For example, Proverbs 13 explains.
“Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but when the desire comes, it is a tree of life.” Proverbs 13:12 NKJV emphasis added.
The Tree of Life referenced here is like rivers in the desert when our joy explodes to answered prayers.
Declare
LORD, thank You for making a way for me and sending rivers in the desert to refresh me as I wait upon You.
I cried out to You like David did long ago and You will answer me, too.
You have not changed because I know You love me with an unfailing love.
Praise is my joyful response as I draw nearer to You today.
With my whole heart, I thank You.
Have a blessed and refreshing day in Jesus’ name.
