How to Break Depression
Depression needs to break off of you and it happens when your soul is at rest.
Jeremiah 6:16 says: “Thus says the LORD: ‘Stand in the ways and see, and ask for the old paths, where the good way is, and walk in it; Then you will find rest for your souls.””
Two things this verse is saying:
- The old paths = any path that makes you walk towards Jesus.
And the paths are considered old for one reasons — the people that went before you walked on these path for many years. - Rest for your souls.
Your soul is your mind, will, and emotions. And your soul needs to rest — to be comforted and at peace.
For thousands of years, people have followed certain paths that Scripture has mentioned. And here are three things we need to know about these old, ancient paths:
1. Path of Obedience
Pastor Kevin Zadai, is a powerful man who walks so close with Jesus.
Kevin used to be a flight attendant and one day as he finished handing out drinks to the passengers, he recalled the feeling of his spirit leaving his body.
He looked to the side and Jesus was standing next to him.
Jesus said that because He was so well pleased with him and that his earthly assignment was complete — He was going to take Kevin home to Heaven right in that moment.
In other words, Jesus was so happy that his servant was so obedient, that He could not wait any longer to be with Kevin in heaven for eternity.
Kevin asked Jesus for more time to do more work for Him and Jesus accepted.
Kevin is obedient, not depressed.
Any depression then Kevin would have said, “Yes LORD! Take me home as soon as possible!”
Walk on the path of obedience and you will see that you will want to live another day for your life will have great purpose.
2. Path of Worship
Worshipping Jesus will decrease your depression.
The National Library of Medicine did a study on people on peoples brains.1
The study showed that when people mediate on God or worship God, the feel good hormones – serotonin and dopamine would flood the brain and depression would decrease.
Why? Because God created our bodies to worship.
3. Both paths brings you to Jesus
These path converge and bring you closer to Jesus. These are paths to a better relationship with God.
I once had an older church friend named Tom. He was around his mid 50s and this man was always happy.
Every Sunday he would smile, give you hug, tell you a joke, and make you laugh. He was the first one at the altar and the first one to lay hands on you and pray — and of course, all the while smiling the entire time.
One Sunday, Tom said “Let’s go get a frosty.” So Tom and I sat in a booth at a Wendy’s and I had Tom’s individual attention.
I asked him the question that was on my mind for a year — “How are you so happy all the time?”
Tom talked about his parents were strong Christ followers and how much they blessed him growing up, how he read his Bible daily, and how trusted Jesus.
But he concluded his answer with this: “I am so happy because I have a relationship with Jesus.”
This is what the old paths do for you — they move you into a deeper relationship with Jesus and that will break your depression.
Lastly, Jesus says this: “My People I know you are wanting a rest — a rest for your souls.
Do not stop striving to come after Me.
Make the necessary changes, so you can do all that I want you to do and become all that I have designed you to become.
You will see good things, great things when you submit to Me.
Do not look down upon the old things of the past — the basic things.
I AM in all of that. I want your heart.
Seek the old paths as you seek Me. Prosperity will come.
Good things are happening when you come to Me with all of your heart!”
