The Bronze Serpent and The Son of Man — Look Up and Live
The metal “Bronze” is defined as solid, durable, sturdy and strong, together meaning a finished work or product which embraces Moses’ workmanship on the “Bronze Serpent” for the Israelites that were bitten by a snake and would die.
It is a metal that signifies Judgement and sanctification used in the Temple and Altar.
There are also intimate references of the Son of Man’s body, his legs to be like pillars of bronze, which denotes strength.
The Bronze Serpent was an object of symbolic significance which was used to made a public spectacle of the snakes that bit the Israelites in reality.
In order to save the Israelites, most importantly the relationship Moses had with God flowed as a blessing to the community and his obedience produced a mighty restoration of their lives.
Moses the mediator-leader was attuned to hearing constant murmurs from the Israelites while on the other side, instructions from God.
He genuinely was concerned for the people he was leading and would seek God for them and bring instructions from God to them, making him a Godly leader.
His relationship with God was an answer to the Israelites cry.
Based on this relationship he had with God, God entrusted him with the responsibility of people’s lives!
God instructed Moses to carve a Bronze Snake and hang it on a pole, so that those who saw it, may live, though bitten by snakes.
God entrusts leadership with Lives!
The snakes were sent by God as a result of Israel’s disobedience unto God, but to Moses, God gave an outcome to save those bitten by the snakes.
“For His anger is but for a moment, but His favor is for a lifetime or in His favor is life. Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.” Psalm 30:5.
God leaves human beings with free will to Repent as their reward. The Israelites repented, and asked Moses to pray for them, and Moses prayed.
“Then The LORD sent venomous snakes among them; they bit the people and many Israelites died. The people came to Moses and said, “We sinned when we spoke against The LORD and against you. Pray that The LORD will take the snakes away from us.” So Moses prayed for the people.” Numbers 21:6-7.
Look and Live :
“The LORD said to Moses, “Make a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live.” So Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, they lived.” Numbers 21:8-9.
Murmuring and disobedience were actions of looking away from The LORD which is the conclusive theme of the subject.
The LORD’s instruction to Moses to make a Serpent out of Bronze, defines the hardness and stiffness and the sin of man’s body, like bronze.
“…. but the people of Israel, who pursued the law as the way of righteousness, have not attained their goal. Why not? Because they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone.
As it is written: “See, I lay in Zion a stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes them fall, and the one who believes in him will never be put to shame.”” Romans 9:31-33.
The serpent bit them as a result of disobedience. When they cried out to Moses and Moses unto God;God caused a way out for them by having Moses lift up the image of a snake in bronze, they looked up and lived and did not die.
Moses lifted up the Serpent — The Israelites looked up and Lived!
Sins were punished by looking up on the bronze serpent; the lifting up of the snake denotes sin being judged and defeated.
The metal bronze denotes sin and judgement. It showed that the sin that caused them to be bitten by the snakes were defeated by the serpent hung on the pole, those who looked up to what was lifted up lived and did not die.
What happened between Moses and God was an Intercessory Resolution of Victory, but the people needed to do one thing! To look up and Live !
“…. having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross. And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.” Colossians 2:14-15.
“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.” John 5:24.
An ordinary pole made null and void by a Blood stained Cross:
The bronze snake lifted up by Moses represents Satan, who was made a public spectacle which was fulfilled when the son of man was lifted up by God !
“And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish,” John 3:14.
When a matter is raised, it raises the eyes of people toward it!
What is raised, draws attention!
God was drawing people toward Him — by lifting up Jesus Christ.
Matters that cannot be sorted at an eye level needs a higher level of insight and sight!
This is pure demand of Focus. Focus to seek God and Live!
“And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto Me.” John 12:32.
The nature of a serpent is to crawl on the earth and eat the dust of the earth — a curse — which was lifted up on the pole in a cast of bronze, so as to signify what was earthly was judged in a Divine manner, and peoples lives were saved by believing in what they saw.
