Words of Life…. or Death?
Every word we utter carries a heavy weight and a profound impact.
The wise man Solomon recorded for us a sobering truth in Proverbs 18,
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and they who indulge in it shall eat the fruit of it [for death or life].” Proverbs 18:21.
Furthermore, Jesus spoke, in Matthew 5,
“You have heard that it was said to the men of old, ‘You shall not kill,’ and whoever kills will be liable to the judgment. ‘ But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca!’ will be liable to the Sanhedrin; and whoever says to him, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the Gehenna of fire.” Matthew 5:21-22.
Too often, in moments of anger, we say words that are truly murderous.
If Jesus says that even a “raca” (equivalent to our “fool”), doesn’t go unpunished or judged, imagine the consequences of the unspeakable words that come out of our mouths, especially in moments of anger.
This is why we must keep a bit in our mouths like the horses described by James. (James 3:2-6)
Even more, we must deal with the attitudes of our own heart so that we might draw from a pure fountain, a “life-giving source” from within to give to others.
We must take to The LORD for cleansing, any rottenness of hurt and offence that lingers and festers within our hearts.
The Bible states, “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.” (Proverbs 23:7a)
James warns us that with the same mouth we cannot bless God and curse his children. (James 3:9,10)
We are called to imitate our Father as much loved children, (Ephesians 5:1). In this way, we want to feel what our Father feels, and respond and act as He would do.
God is not only the Great I AM, but also a Father, especially a Father who loves His children.
It’s this name, “Father”, that I feel strongly in my heart now more than ever, and so I dare say that every word we pronounce against another human being reaches Him like a stab in the heart.
I know this aspect of His heart and I understand this pain that He must feel.
It’s the same reaction any parent feels in their hearts when they hear their children spoken badly of by others.
When we speak derogatory words of those made in His image, we deny these ones for whom He paid so great a price to redeem.
When we wound others so recklessly with our words, we pronounce evil upon them.
We are called to speak life to a dying world!
We must understand the kingdom which we are activating with our words, and the power of either life or death that is within the words that we speak.
We must take with great seriousness, the commitment that we are called to in Christ Jesus to bring the Kingdom of God in all aspects of our lives, offering our words and our thoughts as a holy offering to our Father and our God.
Christ — Our Example
God sent Jesus Christ as both our Source of Life, and a model for us to imitate and follow.
God wants to help us become like Jesus, but we must be willing to go through the process of consecration and renewal to be made in His righteousness.
Do we perceive the cost of His suffering?
Do we feel His pain?
Do we hear His weeping?
If we cannot understand and feel His heart, we will never have the motivation to allow the complete transformation of our hearts.
Father,
We want to dry Your tears.
We want to heal the wounds of Your heart.
We want to be responsive to You.
We want to tell You that we have understood.
We want to confess that for too long we have been self-serving.
We want to tell you that Christ did not die in vain.
We want to bless with our mouths and not curse.
We ask that You seal our mouths with the Blood of the Lamb.
We ask that You anoint our tongues with the oil of Heaven.
We ask that Your words would come from our mouths.
We ask that You purify our hearts, making us ready vessels for Your goodness.
We ask that You fill us with Your Spirit of compassion and light that the world may see and experience Your manifest sons and daughters.
We want to exalt You.
We want to glorify You.
We want to praise You.
We want to honor You.
We want to bless You
But above all,
We want to love you.
Through Jesus Our LORD,
Amen and Amen.
