We have been sharing and learning this gift, if you did not capture the first two parts, I encourage you to go there and begin from the basics. I started by creating desire in us for dreams and visions.
It is unfortunate that this gift though prophesied by Joel, and fulfilled in Acts as being part of the outpouring of the spirit, remains to be the most forgotten or little considered.
“And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your young men shall see visions, your old men shall dream dreams,” Act 2:17.
This cuts across all ages, it should be for all of us experience in Christ.
“Then He said, “Hear now My words: If there is a prophet among you, I, the LORD, make Myself known to him in vision, and I speak to him in a dreams,” Numbers 12:6.
We looked at this scriptures earlier, first of all Numbers 12:6, does not mean because we all dream we are prophets however we have been included in the prophetic outpouring so just like prophets we will have significant dreams and visions, may be not to the level of prophets but we will have this gift working through us.
Interpretation is just as important as dreams itself, dreams and visions are modeled like parables, like short story illustration given to emphasise to us one particular truth. But the dreams truth to be understood, it must first be interpreted.
“If there is a messenger for him, a mediator, one among a thousand, to show man His uprightness,” Job 33:23.
This verse is talking about the dreamer and the dreams when God opens the ears of men and seals there instructions. He says He does this when deep sleep falls upon men.
Therefore He states that one in one thousand people had the right attitude before God to receive the gift of interpretation in the Old Testament. However in the New Testament, we all have access to new heart and have had new spirit within us. We have to endeavor to keep our hearts right before God for this gift to continue to flow.
God will hide things from your interpretation if your heart is not right. It is to say that even though we have received redemption and clothed in Christ our old carnal tendencies can rise up and block us from receiving and interpreting dreams revelations.
At this point I would discourage total dependence on dream charts or a dream dictionary…… You know we have many books written about dreams and meaning of symbolism.
The interpretation tools can sometimes mislead the interpretation. Remember we said dreams are the work of the Holy Spirit when God given, so He will be involved in interpretation too. Symbols and numbers may mean nothing if not interpreted in the contextual language of the Holy Spirit.
There are biblically proven principles of interpretation, and those still need to be understood in our life context. What God spoke to Joseph in a dream, where the sun, the moon and eleven stars were bowing before him, may not mean the same today. God can use the sun or the star in your dream to illustrate entirely different thing today.
We will look at few guidelines and principles, again this are just principles to help you.
1: What Is God presently doing in my life?
Remember, dreams are instructions, probably God is instructing you about what He is doing at the moment in your life. You probably won’t dream very far from where you are!
Ask yourself, is where you are, the right place to be?
The chief baker and the butler all had a dream in relations to their fate at that moment. They were in prison with Joseph, so when the dream came, it was God speaking to them in that geographical context of being prisoners. He sealed instructions in their hearts concerning what was going to happen to each one of them.
God spoke to them within their trades. The Baker saw three basket the top one having bread; Genesis 40:8-18. That is what he did on daily basis. Same to the (cup-bearer) Butler, seeing three branches blossoming and from them came wine which he gave to the king. Again, this was his daily assignment in the Courts.
2. Identity the Abnormalities in your dreams.
For you to break your dream and size it to what stands out as important, you need to find out the contrasting elements. Ask yourself, why is this object used in my dream instead of the other? Why was the flying car used? A bus moving on top of water instead of a ship? Why a bicycle instead of a car? Be concerned why you are naked in a dream.
Being chased by people. Unknown faces in a dream. Seeing a pastor wearing muddy shoes while he is preaching on the pulpit. God hides meaning in abnormal dream situations and objects.
3. Title your dream.
For accurate interpretation, classify your dream. Was is it fearful? Did you feel a sense of hope in the dream? Panic, rest, fulfilled, embarrassed, peace etc.
4. Record your dream as soon as you have it.
This will help you remember your dream, and it does help in “redreaming” that is, having the dreams play back in your memory.
A dream not understood remains mere occurrence. When understood, a dream becomes life changing experience.
“Thus speaks the Lord God of Israel saying, “Write in a book for yourself all the words that I have spoken to you,” Jeremiah 30:2.
5. Role play in the dream.
Who are the people in your dream? What tasks do they have?
When you are in the dream, are you a participator or an observer? How are you participating?
Judge what the dream is saying based on people’s mood and actions, as they appears to you. It may not be them initiating the ordeal, but a general message.
