In Hebrews six we see a challenge going forth which brings to the forefront the thought that many should GO ON INTO SALVATION and not just hang around tasting and handling salvation and coming short of that which was real. Look at the verses and understand what it is saying:

“1 Therefore let us go on and get past the elementary stage in the teachings and doctrine of Christ (the Messiah), advancing steadily toward the completeness and perfection that belong to spiritual maturity. Let us not again be laying the foundation of repentance and abandonment of dead works (dead formalism) and of the faith [by which you turned] to God, ² With teachings about purifying, the laying on of hands, the resurrection from the dead, and eternal judgment and punishment. [These are all matters of which you should have been fully aware long, long ago.]
³ If indeed God permits, we will [now] proceed [to advanced teaching].
⁴ For it is impossible [to restore and bring again to repentance] those who have been once for all enlightened, who have consciously tasted the heavenly gift and have become sharers of the Holy Spirit,
⁵ And have felt how good the Word of God is and the mighty powers of the age and world to come, ⁶ If they then deviate from the faith and turn away from their allegiance — [it is impossible] to bring them back to repentance, for (because, while, as long as) they nail upon the cross the Son of God afresh [as far as they are concerned] and are holding [Him] up to contempt and shame and public disgrace.
7 For the soil which has drunk the rain that repeatedly falls upon it and produces vegetation useful to those for whose benefit it is cultivated partakes of a blessing from God.
⁸ But if [that same soil] persistently bears thorns and thistles, it is considered worthless and near to being cursed, whose end is to be burned.
⁹ Even though we speak this way, yet in your case, beloved, we are now firmly convinced of better things that are near to salvation and accompany it” Hebrews 6:1-9 AMP.

In studying these verses let us notice that there is the admonition to Go on into Perfection and to stop hanging around the doorway of salvation itself. It should be noted that the foundational principals of salvation are clear yet these have need to “Press On Into Them and to Become Perfected.”

These people are not all truly saved and Justified people but are mixed in with those who are truly believing, because we see some falling back and not continuing on into salvation. If a person does not fully receive Jesus Christ and His provisions for eternal salvation he will not be saved but will bring forth fruit which is not good and will be cast out and burned (sent to Hell to the Fire). But as it states in Verse 9:

“Even though we speak this way, yet in your case, beloved, we are now firmly convinced of better things that are near to salvation and accompany it” Hebrews 6:9.

Yet, In the true believer (in the case of the true born again Christian, “THE BELOVED”) consider that there are things evident that do “ACCOMPANY” or Follow those who are truly saved. In other words these people were SHOWING FORTH FRUIT OF REAL SALVATION: things that ACCOMPANY or things that are the results of true salvation.

Notice the wording describing FRUIT coming forth after the RAIN. The rain falls on the Earth and waters the earth bringing forth fruit.

“For the soil which has drunk the rain that repeatedly falls upon it and produces vegetation useful to those for whose benefit it is cultivated partakes of a blessing from God” Hebrews 6:7.

The rain falls on everyone, the just and the unjust. God has sent his light to lighten every man, yet only those who move to accept that light and move into it… BECOME SAVED OR TRUE BELIEVERS. Even as in the Earth there are IN THE SAME GROUND many Thorns and Thistles, which to all of us are WORTHLESS and good for nothing but to be REMOVED AND BURNED.. so is it in the picture we see here of true salvation. The bible states in John 1:9 that “Jesus is the light that lights EVERY MAN who comes into the world”, yet many will LOVE DARKNESS over that Light. Yet God did light them all.

Jesus did talk about this same process in Matthew 13:3-9 when he talked about the different kinds of ground on which the Seed of the Word of God fell. We remember him talking about four types of ground:

1. Ground by the Wayside
2. Ground full stones without depth of earth
3. Ground full of thorn’s which choked the seed
4. Ground which was GOOD bringing three degrees of fruit

It is the same here as there. Jesus said some people hear the Word of God and the seeds fall by the wayside and the birds (devil) comes and eats the seed and they do not give life. Others receive the seed of the Word of God readily but when persecution arises they fall back and others fall in ground which are full of thorn’s and the Word of God is choked with the CARES OF THIS WORLD and the people do not continue. Jesus did say that many seeds fell on GOOD GROUND and in this good ground the seed did PRODUCE FRUIT which varied, but it produced. The Good Ground represents the TRUE BELIEVER who will go on and we will see FRUIT which is proof that they have true salvation. The mere fact that first three grounds were WORTHLESS and did not produce IS LIKE THOSE WHO FALL BACK.. AND IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO RENEW THEM WITH ANY FORM OF REPENTANCE OR PREACHING. These people who are “Falling Back” are NOT SAVED PEOPLE but are only those who are COMING PART WAY and mere TASTERS of the Good things of God.

In the Hebrew verses one comes and is enlightened or understands. He even tastes, or is pricked in their conscience and taste the power of the Holy Spirit of God, or experience conviction and drawing to come to Christ, even having seen the power of God manifest before them in signs and even wonders and miracles; YET TO TURN AWAY FROM ALL AND REFUSE CHRIST! In many cases people have seen even the Lord yet turned and walked away. I heard about people gathered for a huge crusade in India who, as the preacher preached, SAW JESUS WALKING IN THE CROWD. These people who saw him, did EXPERIENCE THE POWER OF THE WORLD TO COME, yet, still had to accept this Jesus as their Lord. Many went back and remained Hindi because of their culture or difficulty of changing to become Christian was fought with much persecution.

Like I said above, I have watched this process over and over many times in my seventy years as minister and pastor. I have watched them come and go, in and out the door of the church. One day they are there and seeming like they are concerned, the next day you can not find them. I have seen people come in and literally HOLD ON TO THE PEW in front of them as they ARE SHAKEN BY THE POWER OF GOD, only to get up and run out the door never to return. I have cried when I watched them walk away and later I pick up the telephone to hear of a car wreck and a sad story of how they were killed. I have stood in funeral homes beside the bodies of Christ Rejectors who AT ONE TIME WERE PROFESSORS OR SEEKERS OF THE TRUTH. I have seen people perish and go to hell having been ON THE VERY DOORSTEP OF HEAVEN ITSELF, only to turn and walk away forever!

It is clear, that IF these people who are MERE PROFESSORS or only “FOOLING AROUND AND HANDLING THE WORD OF GOD AND THE POWER OF GOD” do not “GO IN” to partake of ALL THE LORD OFFERS, they CANNOT BE SAVED OR REPENT. This is the total rejection, even the Sin which does bring them to eternal death, to be rejected by God forever.

We are not the final judges of these who turn back, but can only see that out of the MANY THOUSANDS who actually come to make professions in Christ and study his word, only a few remain to bring forth real fruit unto Eternal Life. The picture we must see is that there are MANY PROFESSORS. Now out of that great number how many are really saved?

***It is clear to me that THIS PASSAGE COULD NOT BE TALKING ABOUT TRUE CHRISTIANS FALLING AWAY AND BEING LOST. It would be inconsistent with the Word of God which says in so many places the truth that Salvation is NOT OF MAN but of God himself. The verse that we have compared this verse with is ONLY ONE OF MANY who speak of Eternal Salvation given by the Lord, WITHOUT WORKS, but by mere Faith in the Lord. We must understand the horrible truth of the consequences of Rejecting such a marvelous GRACE SALVATION.

For someone to teach that a person can experience and know the Lord, in all his power and be truly born again, then that same Lord to reject him because of failure is not consistent with the teachings about salvation. When a person is Truly Saved that person will bring forth fruit unto eternal life. This is true because in him is the true works of God himself manifested. To the one who is Born Again and truely the Lords, the Lord himself will help him and he will give PERSEVERANCE to remain His.

The Scriptures say that Salvation is a FREE GIFT from God. It is NOT RECEIVED BY WORKING and cannot be because it is FREELY GIVEN. If a man thinks that he can please God by working, he is deceived because the Bible says, THERE ARE NONE RIGHTEOUS, NO NOT ONE. It is therefore clear that Eternal Salvation is given by God to all who will come to him and Believe, simply believing and receiving that wonderful Grace which is His UNMERITED FAVOR.

CONCLUDING VERSES:

“²⁰ For no person will be justified (made righteous, acquitted, and judged acceptable) in His sight by observing the works prescribed by the Law. For [the real function of] the Law is to make men recognize and be conscious of sin [not mere perception, but an acquaintance with sin which works toward repentance, faith, and holy character].
²¹ But now the righteousness of God has been revealed independently and altogether apart from the Law, although actually it is attested by the Law and the Prophets, ²² Namely, the righteousness of God which comes by believing with personal trust and confident reliance on Jesus Christ (the Messiah). [And it is meant] for all who believe. For there is no distinction, ²³ Since all have sinned and are falling short of the honor and glory which God bestows and receives.
²⁴ [All] are justified and made upright and in right standing with God, freely and gratuitously by His grace (His unmerited favor and mercy), through the redemption which is [provided] in Christ Jesus, ²⁵ Whom God put forward before the eyes of all] as a mercy seat and propitiation by His blood [the cleansing and life-giving sacrifice of atonement and reconciliation, to be received] through faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in His divine forbearance He had passed over and ignored former sins without punishment.
²⁶ It was to demonstrate and prove at the present time (in the now season) that He Himself is righteous and that He justifies and accepts as righteous him who has [true] faith in Jesus.” Romans 3:20-26 AMP.
