“I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them. How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with thee,” Psalm 139:14-18.
Everyone of us has a very complex DNA structure that identifies us as us. We inherit certain genes from each of our parents, and at birth, our own individual genetic code is formed.
We are told that this DNA strand is so complex that it is made up of a three billion letter code that is embedded within us. One cannot dismiss the notion that there is an intelligent design behind the creation that has embedded this awesome work in each of us.
And yet, just as each of us has our own very unique “physical” code of DNA residing within us, I believe that there is also a spiritual code that we possess. For as the psalmist says above, God has searched us and knows us, and is acquainted with all our ways.
We are told in Jeremiah 1:5,
“Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.”
The Father knew Jeremiah before he was born, and had ordained that he was to be a prophet to the nations. He knew each one of us before we were born, and He had a plan in mind for our lives that was to be uniquely our own.
When our new life began in Christ, the old life was replaced with a new one. And yet we also know that the old man, our sinful nature, is still a part of us. But every day that we live in Him, the old is passing away.
And this new life in Christ, is actually His Spirit working within us. It is the very same Spirit that caused Him to be raised from the dead. It is the very same Spirit that spoke creation into existence.
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new,” 2 Corinthians 5:17.
And so, if indeed we each have within us a very complex DNA strand that is made up of a three billion letter code, so is it not possible that there is a spiritual strand that resides within us that was created to exhibit those unique characteristics of God’s spiritual character “in us?”
Since God knew Jeremiah before he was born, and also knew each one of us, those spiritual strands of DNA were already being formed by Him. They were purposefully wrought in the heavens in such a way, that they would unfold as our spiritual man was to come forth.
And this is not to say that one could “see” this spiritual coding within us. It’s not visible to the eye, just as our physical DNA cannot be seen. The most sophisticated medical instrument upon the earth could not enable one to peer into our chambers to see it.
One couldn’t shine an illuminated light within us to see this marvelous work, but that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t exist. We cannot see our spirit, but it is there hidden deep within us.
But these attributes of spiritual DNA cannot come unless they are formed within the new man.
“Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit,” John 3:5-8.
The first physical man and the last Adam are linked together. The same DNA that was in the first Adam was in Christ because he was created in the image of God. When the Holy Spirit conceived Jesus in Mary’s body, He took her DNA and coupled it with the perfect DNA that was created on the sixth day. This conception was necessary so that Jesus would be the perfect unblemished sacrifice and also represent and die for all humanity.
“Thus it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being”; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit,” 1 Corinthians 15:45.
“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them,” Genesis 1:27.
