Purposes of Prophecy
1. Edification — “to build up” — 1 Corinthians 14:3 — But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men.
2. Exhortation — “ To call near, cry out, employ” — 1 Corinthians 14:3.
3. Comfort — “to encourage, console” — 1 Corinthians 14:3.
4. Convict — 1 Corinthians 14:24-5 — “But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or an uniformed person comes in, he is convinced by all, he is convicted by all. And thus the secrets of his heart are revealed; and so falling down on his face, he will worship God and report that GOD is truly among you.”
5. Impartation — 1 Timothy 4:14 — “Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you BY PROPHECY with the laying on of the hands of the eldership.”
6. Warfare — 1 Timothy 1:18 — “This charge I commit to you, son Timothy, according to the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you may wage the good warfare.”
7 Direction/ Warnings — Paul told NOT to go to Jerusalem — Acts 21: 7-14 — and in other times told to go to Asia, and Rome, etc. Joseph told in dreams to marry Mary, and warned to flee to Egypt when Herod wanted to kill Jesus.
8. Foretell future — Luke 1:66-80 — The Book of Revelation.
9. Praise — prophetic song/ declaration — Luke 1:46-55 — Mary’s proclamation
