Do you have a favorite story you could hear over and over and never get tired of it?
The Christmas story is one of the greatest of all time, and we retell it every year!
But the stories we often repeat can sometimes cause us to miss the significance of what we’re being told.
I want to take a minute and share 5 powerful life-lessons we can all learn from the Christmas story. I encourage you to reflect on these as we enter into 2020!
1. Sometimes the journey isn’t easy.
In Luke 2, we find out that while Mary was pregnant with Jesus, Caesar wanted to take an account of his people through a census.
This meant that everyone had to return to their hometown, along with their families. Since Joseph’s hometown was Bethlehem, he had to help Mary travel 8–10 days from Nazareth on a hard road during the last stretch of her pregnancy!
Sometimes, the road to giving birth to the promise God has given you won’t be easy. But the Lord will be with you every step of the way!
2. God makes a way for you.
“And she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them,”Luke 2:7 NIV.
If you find yourself thinking that there is no room for you to do what God has called you to, take some encouragement from this: There was no room for Jesus either.
But God had a plan. When there were no rooms available for His son to be born, they found a small barn.
Your entrance into the destiny God has for you may not be grand. There may not be shouts or applause when you start living out the life God has called to you. But The LORD will make a way for you when there seems to be no way. Count on it.
3. God rewards the humble.
“And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An Angel of The LORD appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the Angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.” Luke 2:8–10 NIV.
The first people God announced His son’s birth to were shepherds watching their flocks. Shepherds were not considered a high class of people in those days, but God wanted to make a point.
God rewards the humble, and the love of Jesus is for everybody!
If you find yourself being overlooked or underestimated, you can trust that God sees you and will reward you with good news! Maybe you’ll even be the first to find out, like the shepherds.
4. God’s peace will fill the Earth.
“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end,” Isaiah 9:6–7 NIV.
God has given us the ultimate promise. Through Jesus — and through us — God will fill the Earth with a peace that will not end.
Remember, no matter what is going on in the world today, you can rest in the truth that God’s peace will win out.
5. Some gifts come in odd packages.
“He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him,”Isaiah 53:2 NIV.
Jesus did not come to Earth as the handsome prince many people expected him to be. In fact, many people judged him because He seemed a little rough around the edges.
The gift from God you’ve been looking for may come in packaging you didn’t expect. Be sure to keep your spiritual eyes open so you can recognize God’s gifts from Heaven when you see them.
These 5 life-lessons from the Christmas story are simple to understand, but not always easy to act on. Try choosing one lesson to live out on a daily basis, and watch your life drastically change for the better!
Get ready for God to speak to you during this Christmas season.
